Way back when I started blogging in early 2006, things in the blogosphere were very different from what they are today.
Making money from Adsense was all the rage and autoblog software (software that automatically created blogs and filled it with content "scraped" from the web was very popular.
That lasted for a short while until Google changed the algorithms and those blogs could no longer be found.
Fast forward to today....the emphasis is no longer on creating a crappy blog with equally crappy content and then plastering it with ads in the hope that someone will click on the ad and earn you a few cents a click.
The entire blogging game has changed and with it the focus on creating quality content that people want to read and they keep coming back for.
But there are still some myths about blogging, more especially about how to generate an income with your blog and I would like to dispel them here.
Myth #1: You Need To Have A Ton Of Traffic, Visitors & Page Views In Order To Make Money From Your Blog.
That may be true is you're trying to make money from your blog with Adsense or ads.
But there are far more effective ways to make a significant income from your blog without requiring a significant amount of traffic.
I'm going to share that with you later on in this post.
Myth # 2: You Need To Have Ads Plastered All Over Your Site In Order To Make Money.
Don't you just hate it when you get to a site and there are ads everywhere....above the header, above, below and in between the content, in the sidebar....everywhere.
I absolutely hate sites like that and I never want my website to be cheapened like that. The truth is you don't need a single ad on your website in order to earn an income.
The days when you could generate thousands of dollars a month with a few well-placed ads on your blog are long gone.
Here's why: In order to generate any appreciable income from the ads on your blog, you need to get hundreds of thousands of views a day.
And in order to generate those page views. you need to create tons of content and focus on driving insane amounts of traffic to your site.
This is very hard to do for experienced bloggers, not to mention newbies.
There is a much easier way and I'm going to share that with you later on in this post.
Another reason I don't like ads is that you have to spend all this time creating all this epic content and then drive traffic to your blog only to have them click away on an ad....and for all that effort you're rewarded with a few cents.
Myth # 3: You Need To Write A Ton Of Sponsored Posts To Make Money From Your Blog
That's not true. For those not familiar with sponsored posts, those are posts that companies pay you to write about their products.
And while sponsored posts can be very lucrative, they are also notoriously hard to write (in a way that doesn't come across as spammy, sleazy or salesy). And they don't make for very compelling reading.
If every second post on your blog is a sponsored post, readers are going to catch on very quickly and stop reading. After all, no one wants to be pitched all the time.
Myth # 4: You Need To Blog Every Single Day If You Want To Earn Money From Your Blog.
That may have been true a while back, but in today's era of information overload, there is no need to blog on a daily basis.
The key to a successful blog is not more content. It's about effectively promoting the content you already have.
Derek Halpern of the popular blog, Social Triggers, says that you need to spend 20% of your time creating content and then 80% of your time promoting that content if you want your blog to be successful.
So now that you know what doesn't work, let's discuss what does.
Here are the top 3 ways to make money from your blog:
1. Promoting Affiliate Products.
These could be physical products (such as books, vitamin supplements, gardening tools etc). Or they could be digital information products such as eBooks, online courses etc.
So let's say you have a gardening blog. You could promote all sorts of gardening equipment on your blog and you could also promote courses, eBooks etc.
2. Selling services such as coaching, VA services etc.
You can sell any number of business and/or personal services including coaching, VA (virtual assistant services), writing, editing, proofreading etc.
This is my favorite because there is nothing to ship out. Products are delivered instantly to your prospects.
3. Selling your own products.
Again, these could be physical products such as hand crafted items, jewelry, home made skincare products etc.
They could also be digital information products such as eBooks, courses etc. This is my favorite because there is nothing to ship out and the products are delivered instantly to your prospects.
Take some time to brainstorm how you can make money from any of these methods. Also in the comments section below, tell me how you make money (or would like to make money) from your blog.
